KERI: Alleging that the government has failed to provide a solution to their problems caused by mining transportation, women of Dharbandora have threatened to stage a rasta roko on Monday if mining tipper trucks are allowed to transport mineral ore through the small town.
Women members of the Dharbandora Self Help Group (DSHG) have also submitted a memorandum to the mamlatdar of the newly constituted Dharbandora taluka, Satish Prabhu, asking him to prohibit mining traffic till Ganesh chaturthi.
"Life on the Usgao-Dharbandora road at risk. It is very difficult to cross the road. Ankush Gaonkar from Gudke and Prasad Pawaskar from Sanjeevani factory area have died in road accidents due to mining trucks," says Suraj Garad of from Ponsuli-Dharbandora.
Tanmayi Nadkarni, a law student from Dharbandora said that she met with an accident caused by a mining truck when she was in Std III. "Till date, I have not recovered. A journey from Dharbandora to Ponda by bus is very risky and it takes four hours, although the distance is less than 20 km," she said.
Gurudas Gaonkar, PTA chairman of Anandibai Marathi High School said that students have been reaching late to school due to indisciplined mining traffic.
On June 16, Quepem deputy collector Agnelo Fernandes conducted a public hearing, where Dharbandora women pleaded for a ban on mining transportation. "Although mining traffic has been stopped temporarily, we have learnt it will resume on Monday. We will not allow any mining traffic to resume till Ganesh chaturthi," said Sangeeta Nadkarni, DSHG. – TNN
