CONTINUED ATTACKS ON GRAM SABHAS AND GOAN VILLAGERS by Roger D’Souza

Whether it's Carmona, Chicalim or Cansaulim, the continued attacks on the Gram Sabhas or other villages in Goa is just shocking as it's an attack on democratic traditions and the voice of the Goan people.
Everywhere in Goa the underlying connections between the politician-builder-Government Machinery nexus is evident to all. The voices of the villagers cannot be suppressed. Hiring goons and goondas to intimidate our villagers will not silence the voice of the Goan people and needs to be dealt with with a firm hand. This has to be condemned by all. The Goa Government has a responsibility to listen to the voice of the people and not work in collusion with destructive forces working in tandem with the builders and the Panchayats to push forward their single agenda. Whether it’s the Rahejas project in Carmona, Gonsalves-Dias Gates Project in Cansaulim or DLF in Dabolim we see how our Ministers are directly supporting the builders, Panchayats are working against the wishes of the villagers and not recording the resolutions that are being passed and direct attacks are being launched on the Gram Sabha members by goons and criminal elements to silence their voices.
What will it take for the Goa Government to listen to the wishes and the aspirations of the Goan people? Or are they just blinded by their single minded greed even if it means the destruction of Goa? The people of Goa need to be made inclusive in the democratic and participatory planning for sustainable, equitable, economically and ecologically sound development that retains the basic physical [hydro-geological], environmental, social, ethical, political and cultural characteristics of Goa that has drawn humanity to it across the generations for its greenery, tranquillity and way of life beyond mere existence and monetary net worth. Using the Politician-Builders-Government Machinery nexus to still the voices and aspirations of Goan villagers is wrong and against the law.
There is an urgency to protect the fragile eco-environment in Goa as the destruction continues which will have long lasting and irreversible damaging impacts on our Environment, climate and consequently the quality of life. We need to prioritise on the conservation of Goa’s unique Environment and Ecology and subsequently the multitude of plant, agricultural, forest and marine species that abound in our Goan forests and villages that are under attack due to the accelerated Construction or risk decimating the Goan Ecology which would accelerate land slides, flooding, climate change and destroy our Environment. All Goans urge the Chief Minister to rein in his Ministers! The Panchayats cannot go against the wishes of the villagers and break the law

  1. Will the voice of the innocent Goans ever be heard? In other states of India there would be riots and a Bandh would be called for. Goans have been tolerant for too long , seeing this as a weakness advantage is be taken by these non-Goan developers aided by our corrupt ministers and their hired Goons . The prime example can be seen, our voices through the media has been banned. True Goan Villages are being physically threatened for standing for their rights. These Non-Goan developers have already sold these to be built residents, therefore they will use whatever means they can to go ahead with these projects. Even if it means spilling True Goan Blood. If Goans Voice themselves in one united Voice there will be hope to win. Unity is a must and not an Option.
