SMART BURGLARS AT WORK IN GOA

PANJIM: Burglars have become smarter in burgling houses and keeping the police on their toes. Most of these burglars and thieves come in gangs from other states, burgle houses and go back with booties.
The superintendent of police, special branch, Mr Atmaram Deshpande agreed that there are no Goan organised gangs but added that there are gangs from other states which operate in the state and go back with booties. But some smalltime thieves stay back.
These gangs come from Kolhapur and Mumbai in Maharashtra, Belgaum in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala and stay in hotels and lodges. They break into houses and make away with riches. Thereafter they go back to their home states either by train or bus.
This year so far 269 burglaries have been reported, out of which 75 were committed during broad daylight, while around 516 cases of house break-ins and other thefts have been reported.
The thieves and burglars have their modus operandi. The thieves masquerade as wares sellers selling their household goods at people’s doorsteps. But during this time they survey the houses and brief their bosses, who in turn plan out the robberies. Some burglars mill about the localities so as to get acquainted with the surroundings. Sometimes, they burgle the houses during daytime and decamp with booties.
“There are no fixed timings or fixed pattern as sometimes they strike during broad daylight,’’ Mr Deshpande said.
The SP informed that the police have been tracking them down by keeping a watch but continuous watch is not possible.  And as burglars give a slip to the police, robbery detection rate has not been going up giving the police a bad name.
But Mr Deshpande claimed that police have been successful in nabbing the burglars in Margao, Panaji and other places but in some areas they have not been able to achieve breakthrough.
“We maintain our night patrolling as it becomes easy at night to intercept a person moving suspiciously, but during daytime it is more challenging,’’ he observed.
Informing that the police have been sensitising people and creating awareness, he advised the people to be on their guard by placing modern security gadgets like antitheft system, spy cameras and alarms. (NT)

  1. The Gua police are helpless chaps as most of them are guarding the houses of the Ministers and drug peddlers. Foremost, the police force in Goa is just a fraction but are employed by the political masters to do their chores or collect haftas.
