For The Eyes of Goans Only

Beautiful letters by Goans to Herald
Useless Mapusa Council
by Floriano Lobo, Goa Su-Raj Party

Jyoti Shetgaonkar is absolutely right. Chairperson of the “Useless Mapusa Municipal Council” Mrs Bhakta, should have done the following when the Shiv Sena goons marched to the municipality:

1. Not given in to their stupid demand for a Marathi board: this is not Maharashtra but Goa, and Goa’s official language is Konkani.

2. Not given in without a resolution passed by the Council, and after consulting higher authorities.

The Shiv Sena has no business to enforce Marathi boards in Goa. If at all, local language boards should be in Konkani. There has been no demand for this as Goa is a cosmopolitan state, not a Maharashtra small town.

For Sonia, jail and for tainted cops, bail?
by Diana Pinto, Nagoa

Their latest ‘bold’ move by the Goa Police in the Nadia Torrado case investigation is truly amazing. The unfortunate Sonia Torrado now not only has to contend with the loss and of her child, but also bear continuous and sustained police pressure on her family.

While it is true that the rule of law must prevail, there is also a ‘spirit’ with which the authorities should apply the law. Sonia Torrado is no hardened criminal. She is not an alleged drug dealer who is putting an entire generation of young Goans into jeopardy. She is just a sorrowing mother who will forever have to live with the unfortunate circumstances of her child’s death. She may have made some mistakes and wrong choices, but which of us has not? It is a tragedy that the cops who allegedly sold drugs seized by the police from peddlers were swiftly and conveniently released on bail.

Destruction and tampering of evidence was apparently of no concern to the Crime Branch in that case. Helpless women, it seems, are easy targets for our ‘brave’ policemen, compared to the drug mafia and real criminals, who walk the soil of Goa scot-free.

Joker’s justice by Fatima Sardinha, Margao

The Crime Branch seems determined to do justice to Nadia’s soul. But why did the same justice not prevail in the case of the poor women allegedly strangulated to death by Mahanand? Why was Sonia not allowed to meet her advocate, as Adv Radharao Gracias has stated? The prosecution says that Sonia is needed in custody for interrogation. If so, why wasn’t arrested a month ago; she never applied for anticipatory bail or went underground! Mahanand’s wife was given police protection; Nadia’s mother got police custody. Drug peddlers are allowed to use cell phones in jail; Sonia is not allowed to meet her counsel! Is this justice?
