CONSTRUCTIONS TO BE AXED REDUCED FROM 569 TO 168 ON RE-SURVEY

PANJIM: In what could be termed as a major relief to people who will be affected by the expansion of NH-4A – re-survey has brought down the number of constructions to be axed to 168 from earlier estimate of 569.
The officials of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and PWD officers in their joint submission to representatives of the affected people at the PWD office, Altinho, on Saturday here revealed that now 401 constructions would be saved. The survey had recommended 569 constructions to be brought down for the expansion of NH-4A from Anmod to Panjim.
Affected villages along the NH-4A were vehemently opposed to expansion as it also included demolition of some religious structures that came in the way of expansion.  But in the re-survey, care has been taken to lessen the number of constructions to be demolished and width of the road too has been taken care of at critical locations to save constructions.
As per re-survey, width of the NH-4A will be 35 mts-60 meters as against earlier 45mts-60 meters.  Changes in the width has been made to accommodate the changes suggested by affected people, claimed members of the presentation committee.  As per re-survey – length of the road for expansion has been cut down – earlier 69.070 km of road was planned to be constructed but it has been now reduced to 65.070 km.
Considering the apprehensions of the people along the NH-4A that expansion will cause inconvenience to them in commuting short distances or travelling to a village on other side of the road – crossing and openings at every two kilo meters of National Highway have been planned.
According to presentation, the period of construction will be 30 months and total land requirement is 364 hectors of which, 232 hectors has been already acquired.  Moreover, the expansion of the NH-4A will give easy connection to Belgaum and other NHs. It will also open up connectivity to major ports, eleven industrial estates, 118 factories and major tourist destinations.
Expanded highway will have two toll booths but usage of the highway will be free for two-wheelers and three-wheelers whereas frequent users will be charged one-third of the toll charges. But commercial vehicles will have to pay regular toll charges, claimed the presentation committee. (HD)
