PANJIM: Chief minister Digambar Kamat on Wednesday sought a financial package of around 800 crore from the Centre for undertaking various programmes in sectors like tourism, agriculture, health and up-gradation of infrastructure in the state.
At the meeting of finance ministers chaired by Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi, Kamat made a strong case for Central assistance to put up infrastructural projects like a convention centre of international standard and other tourism-related projects.
Kamat also impressed upon Mukherjee the need to sustain focus on agriculture. "In the last year's budget, agriculture was a priority area and we announced many schemes. Now we need some support to sustain the momentum," said the CM, who also holds the finance portfolio. During his 10-minute speech, he sought Central assistance to strengthen the beach management scheme too. Stressing that the Goa government has made efforts to improve safety of tourists on beaches, he said the state has also taken steps to manage its finances better too.
"I explained our performance over the last three years on revenue generation, financial management, adherence to RBI guidelines, etc," Kamat told TOI. Last year, a special financial package of 200 crore was sanctioned to Goa for its golden jubilee liberation year celebrations. (TNN)
