I am not one to write articles but I have now because Goa is slipping away from our grips..
The greatest unity among Goans was during the Opinion Poll, followed by the Konkani agitation . Was it because Dr Jack Sequeira was a charismatic leader during the opinion poll?
Many of our grandparents and parents were not highly educated but loyalty and unity was their strongest point. Had it not been for Dr Jack Sequeira and his followers (I was one), Goa would have gone to Maharashtra. We would have been forced to wear white topi. Khaki shorts heavy leather chappels and eat pan and “sukha” spitting all over.
Today in the 21st century the literacy rate is the highest in Goa and yet we are disorganized leaving under a criminal and corrupt government. Under our Government pieces of Goa (our Mother Goa) is being sold to non-Goans.
We try to form or join organisations and groups believing we can do better for Goa, at the same time we lack good leadership. We all want to be leaders but not followers leading to chaos. Some of us want to persue politics like headless chickens without a proper foundation. Others divorce themselves from groups or organisations taking with them secrets and selling it to the next bidder (they are known as traitors or back stabbers). Not forgetting politician chamchas infiltrate these groups or organisation create mayhem until they die a death or are dissolved.
The sad part of all this is the Poor Innocent and Voiceless Goans are caught between these groups and organisations on one side and corrupt and criminal politicans on the other, not knowing which way to follow. They hunger and thirst for a glimmer of hope, every promise is priceless to them.
For once until we achieve victory can we put our differences aside and unite for the sake of our Mother Goa?
"Victory is Sweet Defeat is Bitter"
NIZ GOENKAR ADDS: The author Diogo Fichardo was actively involved in the Opinion Poll movement along with Anand Desai of Mopa and others. They were right hands of Dr. Jack Sequeira. He has risked his life a couple of times for protecting Goa's Identity.
There is a vast difference between being literate and being educated. You do not need to be literate to be educated. Our grand parents used to educate us on what was right and what was wrong. They used to educate us on how to behave is wrong when in society, when in company of elders, when in company of women, etc. They used to educate us to respect the learned, to be humble, to have a conscience.
ReplyDeleteEducation has disappeared completely, parents only want their children to be literate, they do not have time to educate their children. They have been "Liberated" from their duties as parents. They have been blinded by the word "Liberation". Politicians have put into their heads that they had been oppressed all these years and have "gifted to Paul what was Peter's" to make them happy. They vote the corrupt because they have become corrupt themselves. They have learnt to rob, steal and cheat others with the sole motive of making fast money. And when in problem, phone the politician. That is why they need these corrupt politicians.
Humility and Honesty is very rare and almost extinct in Goa. Are these not the virtues that needed to be taught by parents?
And now putting all these together, we have Goan who in majority are devoid of education, humility, honesty and conscience; but literate and with money.
There is a saying in Konkani; "Pott bortogoch; ghand xelanv ghalta."
Diogo Fichardo lovely article. Like you most of us did work for the United Goans Party. However I was not even in my teens, yet I worked at the grass root level putting posters and distributing election cards in my village. And we all till today talk good things of our beloved Dr. Jack de Sequeira. However I fail to understand why the people who were brought into politics by Dr. Jack de Sequeira and were MLA's during his term as the Leader of the Oppositon such as Dr. Wilfred D'Souza, Eduardo Faleiro fail to give him any credit publicly and did not instal his statue till date. Do they feel that they are bigger leaders than Dr. Jack ?
ReplyDeleteDefinately Dr. Jack de Sequeira is the tallest post occupation charismatic leader Goa has ever produced. Just a word in the village that Dr. Jack de Sequeira is coming would gather endless sea of people. Dr. Sequeira was honest and true to his word which attracted more crowds . Statehood for Goa and the love for Konkani language were his twin demands for Goa.
If there is no unity today, its because people can't trust the politicians. They talk one thing and do the other. Example Chorchill Kolemao.Cowmuth Digu and other
38 Chors.
The chor corrupt and uneducated politicians will loot and plunder GOANS as long as Goans are divided. So the most important thing for Goans is unity to crush the evil political society.
ReplyDeleteWhen everyone have the ambition to become a leader is good but when everyone want to become a politician, MLA, Minister in the hope of making fast bucks is bad for Goa. In olden days, people were shy to come forward and lead the people. They used to do yeoman service for mankind from behind. Now, greed has taken over. The boy of yesterday after becoming a bit famous in the football team or near the Church immediately bank on his popularity and contest panchayat elections.
ReplyDeleteToday, there are no charismatic leaders but only leaders with muscles. Most of the so called leaders of today are inter related to each other in many ways. Take the example of Monserrate being caught smuggling currency, so many of our MLA's went to his rescue because they are all interconnected. Rane even refused a debate in the assembly on the motion by Parrikar since all belong to the same gang of Chors. Most of them are Chors, they have to protect each other being in the family of the Chors who loot Goa. And to rob Goa, they will back stab anyone. We can take the example of Kamat, Chorchill, Monserrate, Philip Neri, Mathany Saldanha, Aleixo Sequeira, Mickey Pacheco, Sardinha, Jr. Rane and so many. All are back stabbers simply to loot Goa.
Yes, I agree with anonymous the VIII that there is a vaast difference between being literate and educated. Like Diogo says, literacy in this 21st century is the highest, but can we educate these literate people??? Most of these literate people are the crumb eaters of the corrupt politicians. How can the common man educate these literates?? Literacy has no meaning nowadays. The money of the corrupt Chors do the talking. That is education for these crumb eaters.
ReplyDeleteOn another and a personal note, 200 Crows can work magic. And this statement comes from a very literate guy.
Thanks to Diogo Fichardo for his views & observations and to,Anonymous VIII for hitting, exactly, "the nail on the head".
ReplyDeleteWell done guys.
Amongst us Goans, there is something we call here in the UK , "ONE UPMANSHIP".
When one has an idea, that will work , another pops up, thinking he can do better & tries to create division.
Quite often this arises out of sheer jealousy.
Writing an article is not an easy task, but what you have said is true Goans do lack good leaders to take them forward. Many do make the effort to come forward but are rapidly snatched by politicians, that too corrupt politicians. Unity cannot be bought it has to come from the heart.Unfortunately Goan politicians have a lot of money to buy and even finance organizations willing to fight them.
ReplyDeleteI asked these two seven year lads in my village what will they be when they grow up. It wasn't the answer I was expecting, one said he wants to be a priest because he will get Sunday collection, the second boy was even more of a surprise as he wanted to be a political minister like Mickey because they work less but make more money and drive posh cars.
ReplyDeleteAn argument started the first one saying politicians are crooks, thieves and murders. Knowing the families I doubt these two will grow up to be either. It is up to parents to mold their children for the future and its up to the government to set up a good example. Unfortunately in Goa we have Political crumb eaters who will mold their children in a different mind set and Our corrupt ministers need these crumb eaters. This is the cycle that needs to be broken, Hopefully the GRA will be that instrument to do so.
The reason Dr Jack Sequeira was not honored by the politicians you mentioned is because they were busy filling their own pockets forgetting about loyalty and honesty. In the process they ruined Goa followed by the current chor MLAs we have now.
ReplyDeleteBack stabbing is the habit of Goans, specially those lost in their own glory. They are fascinated when they are pampered and when someone blocks or stops their pampering they back stab you. To get their own selfish ends met they back stab you. That is why the indians ghanttis rule Goa. Well said Diogo!
ReplyDeleteTrue leadership comes with hard work recognized by followers. Followers support good leaders to achieve their Goals. No group can function sanely if there is in fighting through jealousy, this is where Goans are lacking unity. Untill and unless we learn to respect each other and the roles we have to play Goans will lose Goa.
ReplyDeleteHi Anand:
ReplyDeleteA good example of moulding is Big Lips Valanka. There are others too amongst the Political class.
Pig Churchill encouraged her to be an Advocate. He blows his trumpet about his childrens acheivements at every opportunity.
When he realised , she does not have the true credentials or charisma to be an Advocate, he suggested to her, becoming a "Social Worker" as a route, to becoming a Politician.
Churchill`s son & daughter no longer practice their chosen professions.Instead, they have opted for quick riches, like their smuggling and theiving father.
Hi Shyam,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you.
A few contributors of NG have done so & continue to do as impostors & using fake names.
Since their agenda could not be fulfilled using NG as a vehicle, their knives are out to sabotage the purpose of NG.
This is the classic case of "fools rushing in , where wise men fear to tread".
Better still there is another quotation: "One mans food is often another mans poison"!!
The biggest back stabber in Goan politics is the pig of Varca who represents Navelim, jumping from one party to another party. Other politicians too jump from one party to another for finincal gains. All these MLAs are a prime example of our corrupt political system.
ReplyDeleteWell said N.Fernandes,
ReplyDeleteBut since these fools could not dominate NG like they wanted to, they rushed in where wise men fearr to tread. And now they try to attack others under fictitious names. Fools will always be fools, that is for sure, and they are trying to prove it by every minute. Desperados!
