MUMBAI: The Mumbai customs officials this week fined Goa education minister Atanasio 'Babush' Monserrate who was detained at the city airport last month for carrying foreign currency worth Rs 24 lakh. The officials have imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh and an additional personal penalty of Rs 2 lakh for carrying cash beyond the permissible limit. Additional commissioner K Premchand has confirmed that the minister has been fined.
The minister was travelling to Dubai. Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) sleuths apprehended him as he did not have the permission from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for carrying currency beyond the permissible limit of $5,000 (Rs 2.24 lakh).
Officials had detained him on the basis of intelligence inputs and had found lots of foreign currency, mainly euros and some dinars. According to officials, he was apprehended while clearing immigration formalities. An investigation was initiated to ascertain the source of the money.
This was the second high profile person held at any Indian airport in three months for breaching norms and carrying undeclared foreign currency. In February, Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was detained at Delhi for carrying undeclared currency worth Rs 60 lakh.
When is this Idiot Monseratte going to be prosecuted for breaking a law.?
ReplyDeleteThis idiot has money to burn what is 10 lakh for him. The thief will throw out more money than that to bribe the customs and the whole indian government. The scoundrels!
ReplyDeleteI think in view of this gross illegality ,by a dysfunctional Goa Government, not to prosecute Monseratte, all other criminals held in Goan Jails for money laundering or economic crimes, should be released with immediate effect.
ReplyDeleteThis is a total coverup. Originally, it was reported to be a huge sum, more than reported here. Chors know how to bribe and save their back. There was a case of one courier from bhatkap at Mumbai airport who was caught with lesser currency travelling to Dubai. He was caught and jailed. It proves in India that only poor people are sent to jail whereas criminals escape. Congress government is one institution of of all criminals.
ReplyDeleteThe figures confiscated will be reduced to avoid Jail term, he will be slapped with a fine that will equal tissue paper to wipe the Ar_e. There are various tiers of Justice that can be manufactured to suit the criminals calibre.
ReplyDeleteA common man would see the walls of Jail for years to come.
The pompous, old fashioned Simon D' Silva was wrong in calling the tainted and corrupt politicians from Goa. Days ago I was taken to Qatar on a short visit by my family member who works there. Many of the Goans I met were enthusiastic about the Goan Club's event. Good, they made it without the politicians. However, Simon D' Silva was for severe criticism for his decision to invite tainted politicians from Goa neglecting some famous, social and charitable Goans within Qatar whom would have been no liability on the organizers. One of them mentioned that if you say “Abbo, kaxtent forzota”, Simon gets furious for reasons unknown. I like the way the common and average Goan in Qatar lives and are happy without these events. There is another self pompous Goan called Jason who identifies as the Manager of Qatar airways, what a false pride of some Goans?
ReplyDeleteGoans meet at the souk, exchanging pleasantries every week-end. Qatar Airways flying directly from Goa made home closer to their hearts.
It is so evident that money power can change the Law rather the entire set up in the system. Thats what exactly we are seeing today. Every politician who has committed a crime has always gone free with a sentence not worth a mention, at the same time a common men has been made to pay a Very Hefty price for even petty crimes.Hope the people can see, read and take appropriate steps .......
ReplyDeleteThe level of high profile corruption Goan ministers are involved in is absurd, this breeder of rapists has money stashed in banks abroad, that cannot be touched by the current Congress Government. If the government changes the politician will change sides to save his bacon. The fine imposed on him is just lose change. Prison would have been a fitting response to his crime.
ReplyDeleteFollow the advice of Anna Hazare, get the Lok pal Bill passed.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if any attack was carried on mine owners,t he Goa police would have arrested the whole village. poor Gaokar is beaten and no arrests until now. What justice in Goa? Criminals are left free, poor people go to jail
We have the most corrupt police force in the world tailing politicians and the rich and powerful, Where does the poor villages stand amidst corruption? The word corruption does not exist in the vocabulary of the poor villagers. Who will save Goans from Goans committing atrocities against their own people? Ours is a cry in the darkness for help. Freedom fighters are only fit to take our tax payers money on false presence.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt, Also give back the lives of innocent persons died in police custody.
ReplyDeleteHad an ordinary citizen been detained, various charges would have been framed and the person would be rotting in police custody. Until produced before a Court of Law(if there is any).
ReplyDeleteHe must have thought he was carrying books to further his education since evreryone is complaining about his uneducation. Suddenly he must have realized that it was currenry instead of books. What will the uneducated do? Smart arses!!
