PANJIM: Commissioner of NRI Affairs, Eduardo Faleiro has informed that eight Goan women, among 20 other Indians who were exploited with the promise of jobs in Albania have returned home and are safe. He however said that there is no complaint filed against the agent who duped them and that identity of the agent is not known.
“They were taken to Albania and made to work 10 hours a day and paid $2 a day, instead of the promised $ 20, plus overtime allowance. We do not have an embassy in Albania so I contacted the secretary and the joint secretary in charge of Central Europe in our Ministry of External Affairs. They informed me that the matter concerned a group of 20 women and 17 of them were repatriated by Government of India. They arrived in Mumbai last Saturday via Istanbul. If any complaint is received by us in this matter we shall ensure appropriate action against the culprits,” Faleiro said.
“They were dumped in a dark room and kept without food because they asked for salaries they were promised,” Faleiro said.
Faleiro expressed regret at the fact that there are very few complaints registered against fraudulent agents. He again reiterated his promise to set up a committee to overlook police investigations into such cases. The progress of the formation of this committee has been painstakingly slow.
