Woken up to the inclusion of 3000 families of Valpoi, in Satari taluka, in the BPL category, represented by Health Minister Viswajit Rane the RDA minister Churchill Alemao questioned why should the poor families in Salcete not enjoy similar benefit?
Alemao posed this question to district collector, South G P Naik as hundreds of applications from Salcete taluka for inclusion in the BPL list lie pending with the taluka Mamlatdar.
While the Taluka Mamlatdar, Paresh Faldessai maintained that many an application does not come under the BPL norms, a visibly disturbed Alemao demanded to know how thousands of families from Valpoi have got into the BPL list if the norms do not favour Goans.
The RDA Minister told the district collector and the mamlatdar at a review meeting that other states across the country has availed maximum benefit and requested bureaucrats to help the Goans to take advantage of the scheme. “BPL families are now entitled for free LPG gas connections besides housing benefits. Officials will not lose anything if more and more Goans are included in the BPL list”, he said.
As the discussions turned stormy with the RDA Minister unwilling to listen to any explanation on the BPL norms, the district Collector suggested to Alemao to put up a note to the Revenue Minister to resolve the problem. “I will draft the note by this evening and you put your signature. This will help expedite clearance of BPL applications”, he added. Sources in the know said that around 800 applications for inclusion of names in the BPL list are pending with the Salcete Mamlatdar for verification.
Meanwhile It is learnt that the talathis entrusted with the job of verification of the applications are very busy with other official work, thus causing delay in the BPL applications.
Salcete Mamlatdar, Paresh Faldessai later told Herald that he has given instructions to the talathis to ensure that the verifications of the applications is completed at the earliest. “Many a talathi has assured to complete the work within a week. The system will be streamlined soon”, he said.
