COUNTING OF VOTES POSTPONED BY SEC

PANJIM: Goa State Election Commission on Saturday decided to postpone counting of votes to be polled on Sunday in elections to corporation of city of Panjim (CCP), to Monday fearing law and order issues in the state capital.
State Election Commissioner Dr M Modassir said that Director General of Police Bhimsen Bassi personally requested to postpone the counting from March 13 evening to March 14 morning at 10.00 am. The Commission had decided to conduct counting on March 13 evening soon after the polls on the same day at Goa college of Pharmacy in Panjim.
Elections for 30 wards of CCP will be held through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) tomorrow and results were expected to be out within half an hour of the counting. BJP, Congress minister Atanasio Monserratte and NCP backed panels are contesting this election, which is fought on various civic issues.
Goa police have already rounded up notorious people in the area as preventive measures ahead of the polls. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Deu Benaulikar said that 17 history sheeters were called to the police station and warned ahead of the polls. – PTI
