PANJIM: A defeated and dejected opposition leader and Panjim MLA Manohar Parrikar-pipped in the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) elections by his Taleigao rival-said that he accepted and honoured the verdict of the people of Panjim. He, however, declined to comment on the situation further.
"The people's verdict is there for them to see and analyse. I honour it but I will not comment on it right away," Parrikar said, holding his cards close to his chest.
Benaulim NCP MLA Francisco 'Mickky' Pacheco, on the other hand, sought to distance himself from the vanquished NCP panel headed by Avinash Bhosale. "I have no comment. I didn't interfere in the electioneering," Pacheco said. When pressed for a comment, he said he might address a press conference on Tuesday.
Rufino Monteiro of Friends of Good Governance, which supported Parrikar's Panjim First panel, said, "We won the battle but not the war. We have increased the opposition to Monserrate and decreased his seats. His victory was very narrow despite and in spite of all the inducements and money power."
Fifth-time-in-a-row Panjim corporator Surendra Furtado said his main aim in the new term will be to acquire Rs 500 crore into the CCP's coffers under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and to shift the two military garages out of Panjim to Bambolim as was earlier proposed. "If the ruling panel approaches us to help them in achieving this, I will definitely support them," Furtado said.
