PANJIM: The superintendent of police, Special Cell, Mr Atmaram Deshpande said that the election to the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP), was peaceful and incident free. He said that the civic election was well organised and well managed by the authorities.
Stating that if the counting was conducted on the same day as the election, he said there could have been trouble from anti social elements as the counting would have continued late into the till night, and that, anti socials elements could take advantage of the darkness to cause trouble.
However, the police were on their toes in view of the remarks made by the Opposition leader, Mr Manohar Parrikar,that the Panjim SDPO was allegedly favouring the Taleigao MLA’s panel, and also for having asked for his temporary transfer during the civic polls.
The DGP, Mr Bhim Sain Bassi, after the State Election Commission, Dr M Modassir had dispatched the letter written by the Opposition leader, asking to transfer the Panjim SDPO, brought in SDPO, Mr Serafin Dias from Ponda for the election.
All the three SDPOs, Mr Serafin Dias, SDPO Mapusa II, Mr Pandarinath Mapari and SDPO, Mapusa I, Mr Sammy Tavares, besides DySP, Mr Raikar were seen very active.
The maximum number of police personnel were posted at Ribandar, at ward 30, at ward 26, besides near the Farmacia College in the city, where the EVMs are kept and at Bhatlem ward from where Mr Madkaikar was contesting as an independent candidate.
