Politics and elections today are no longer a noble mission. It’s a business profession where candidates invest to reap high dividends. My decision to contest the just concluded elections to the Corporation of City of Panaji was however with a commitment to dedicate my time and energy for the all round development of Ribandar and welfare of its residents.
Instead of watching the mess from the sidelines, I felt it would be better to be a participant in the cleansing process of the corruption and scandal ridden CCP. Besides, many people from Panjim, and from elsewhere in Goa, felt that I could play a pivotal role in highlighting the corruption and ensuring accountability and transparency at the CCP. Obviously a few persons were apprehensive and feared my presence there.
I threw my hat in the ring as I had nothing to lose, besides the 23 ays that I would be spending in the campaign. I was pitted against hree formidable candidates and three sitting MLA’s – Babush onseratte, Manohar Parrikar and Victoria Fernandes -- aggressively ampaigned against me. To add to this brigade was the Parish Priest of ibandar Fr. Alcantra Rodrigues who also roared in with vengeance. His role was in total violation of the election code of conduct which prohibits temples, churches and mosques from being used for political propaganda. In the spirit of true Christian charity and with faith in God may I forgive him.
I was expecting the BJP to back me, at least as a gesture for the open support I have given them over the last five years. In a way this election was an opportunity for me to have a first hand experience of BJP’s true colors and its non-secular credentials.
In fact, had the BJP risen above party politics and their ego by making some adjustment in other wards too, the scam ridden current ruling group could have been pushed to the corner.
On our part, we had a very dignified, clean and low budget campaign. There was no money to dole out, no muscles to flex and no alcohol to flow. Despite that 341 voters stood out to vote for me. I salute them all with utmost humility -- 341 voters who withstood the pressure of money and muscle power that was on display by some of the rival candidates all through the campaign. In that sense, my defeat is infact a victory of sorts.
Also, we have to commend the voters of the adjoining ward No 29 who, like in the last CCP polls, this time around too did not succumb to the temptation of the money that was flowing.
In Ward No 30 we had a very clear agenda, outlined with precision in our nine point manifesto, which I was committed to achieve within a year, so that the face of Ribandar would change for the better for once.
Whether in my defeat Ribandar too has lost, only time will tell. But I am sure the winners and beneficiaries of this my defeat are my family, in particular my two young daughters who will be getting now more of my time and attention. They must be truly grateful to the voters – perhaps other than those 341 -- of Ward No 30 for the manner in which the votes were cast by them on March 13. My commitment however to the people of Goa and Ribandar in particular shall never die. The battle against corruption and injustice can never end.
Aires you are a fearless crusader, no doubt about it. Leaders like you are particularly rare in Goa, one who expose and dare to fight against the top goondas that rule Goa. But your actions in the recent past when you rightfully raised issues to a feverish pitch and gained public support, but then either withdrew totally or suddenly went dumb in other instances raised questions about your integrity. You even let down your colleagues from Utt Goenkara who were left embarrased and red-faced in the Rohit-German girl rape case. People were left wondering what flowed across from Taleigao to Ribandar. CREDIBILITY in question???
ReplyDeleteAires you still are one of the most dynamic and feared leader in Goa and you are still required to support concerned Goans against the loot and plunder, corruption and outright sale of Goa to GHANTTIS.
My humble request to you is to leave the past behind and let us restart the fight for Special status for Goa.
Dotor, your defeat is not your own defeat but the defeat and shame of the Church and the people who succumbed to the political lollipops filled with stench of corruption, rapes and child molesters like some of the unholy priests. If the Bishop does not know to guard his flock then he should not cry about people deserting religion and joining other faiths. Where was this priest when people were investigating about the sold properties of the Church? There are priests who sympathise with rapists and killers, mixture of religion with politics for personal benefits.
ReplyDeleteTo Adv. Aries Rodrigues:::The point that you took part in the CCP Election was very admirable.Goa currently lacks good Educated Corporators or MLA`s.You must take comfort in the knowledge that you only lost by a few votes. The margin was very small.Vivana, who`s husband has portrayed himself as a "Crook" and a person that is criminally intentioned, is also more likely to be criminally intentioned. It is a husband & wife plan and tactic. They surely must have discussed tactics and devious methods of winning elections , that he was eventually caught and demoted to Margao.
ReplyDeleteOn the outset the elections seem fair or has been portrayed to be fair. But rest assured this is not the truth.Babush`s noctournal mandarins & thugs were surely at play, with booty`s of cash and goodies in their back-pockets.
Some of this activity will surface as soon as the election fever dies down.
On balance I think Goans all over the world have a much higher level of respect for you , than Monseratte has.Moneserattes is no other than a wanton thug and goonda. He is surely one of the top Criminals Goa has.
I'm glad you didn't win, this I see as a blessing in disguise. As long as you believe in BJP, Gandhi you should be kept at bay, better for Ribandar my Birthplace and better for Goa.
ReplyDeleteWhen will the church leaders ever learn that politics and religion will never MIX. Together with the political crumb eaters They are part to be blamed for Goa's downfall.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I find quite a few Goan Priests now, have become exceedingly greedy.
ReplyDeleteMany have Court cases on property matters. In Church they demand lavish goodies....wine, flowers, candles ,cakes etc.
The Vow they make of "Poverty" is not practised.Celibacy too is questionable, reading all the recent stories in Nwspapers.
Preists too are deliberately associating with society`s devils.A case in hand is the Churchills. They are able to buy a Priest for a few Rupees these days.
Next election I wont be surprised if Fr Alcantro also contests elections. As I had said earlier, what right do priests have to canvas for certain politicians. I am no one to judge but sorry to say some priests are also responsible for the degradation of Goa. What right do you have to give sermons when you yourselves don't practice Gods laws.
